During my time working with small businesses, there is one recurring issue I see pop it’s ugly head every so often. It’s often overlooked in our busy daily operations and the bustle of life, but it’s part of what helps you stand out in the crowd. Today I want to chat about your brand identity.
Let’s dive into what makes a strong brand identity and why it matters.
What is a Brand Identity?
Your brand identity is the personality of your business that sets you apart from all the others. In plain terms, its your businesses identifying features on social media and out in the world. It’s your logo, favicons, fonts, font colors, and general designs that set you apart from every other company out there. It’s totally unique to YOU! Think of it as your businesses fingerprint, in a way!
Why Brand Identity Matters
Your brand identity is so important because it helps set your business apart from the crowd. It helps you build trust and connection with your audience through consistency across all social media platforms. Using your brand identity, your business becomes recognizable to your customers and audience.
Elements of a Brand Identity
Brand Identities have 2 key components – Visual and Emotional. The visual elements consist of your logo, color palette, the typography and your imagery style. The emotional elements are your brand voice, core values, your personality traits and mission statement.
Develop Your Brand Identity
Remember the three important steps in fleshing out your brand identity.
- Knowing Your Audience: Make sure you know who your ideal customers are - understand what they need, what their pain points are, and craft your brand to speak to them.
- Define Your Value: What makes your different from the others? Why should your customers choose you? Be authentic in your response to this!
- Tell Your Story: Your brand has a story, right?! Share more about you and who you are - what made you start your business and try to connect on a human level. (*Please don't AI everything - there is no genuine connection in backless content.)
Common Mistakes
One of the most common mistakes I see my clients doing is trying to appeal to everyone. Not everyone is your customer! Not everyone is going to want or need what you supply to them! Do not gear your content towards people who have nothing to gain from you! Not that you aren’t wonderful and full of content and helpful tips, but I digress.
Another mistake I frequently see is variable messaging across their platforms. If your message from Facebook to Instagram to Twitter to your Blog are all different, your customers aren’t going to know if it’s really you.
Remember, your brand isn’t a static moment in time either. Think of it as a fluid entity. It can evolve and change as you and your business grow and change – there is nothing wrong with that!
Building your brand identity will take time and effort. It may become mentally exhausting but don’t lose hope or get overwhelmed. Start small, be consistent and let your personality shine through!
